Don't Panic! Here's What to Do When Your Tattoo Starts to Fade

So you've had your tattoo for a few years and you've started to notice that the colors aren't as vibrant as they used to be. Or maybe the lines are starting to blur. Don't panic! It's normal for tattoos to fade over time, and there are a few things you can do to help keep your tattoo looking its best.

Fading is Normal...to a Point

The first thing you need to know is that it's normal for tattoos to fade over time. The rate at which they fade depends on a number of factors, including the type of ink used, the location of the tattoo on your body, how well you take care of your skin, and how often you're exposed to sunlight. With all that being said, most tattoos will start to show signs of fading after 3-5 years.

So if your tattoo is starting to fade and it's only been a year or two, don't sweat it! It's probably nothing to worry about. But if you've had your tattoo for 5 years or more and you're noticing significant fading, it might be time to take action.

There are a few things you can do to help prevent your tattoo from fading:

-Avoid direct sunlight: This one is pretty self-explanatory. UV rays can cause tattoos to fade, so it's important to keep your tattoo out of direct sunlight whenever possible. If you must be in the sun, make sure to apply sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) liberally and frequently.

-Stay hydrated: Drinking plenty of water helps keep your skin healthy, which in turn helps your tattoo stay vibrant.

-Moisturize: Just like drinking water helps keep your skin healthy, applying lotion regularly will also help keep your tattoo looking its best. Choose a lotion that doesn't contain any harsh chemicals or artificial fragrances.

-Don't pick at it: It can be tempting to pick at a scab or peel off a bit of dry skin, but resist the urge! Picking at your tattoo can cause damage that leads to fading.

-Visit your artist for touch-ups: As your tattoo starts to fade, you might notice that some parts have faded more than others. If this is the case, visit your artist for a tattoo retouch. They'll be able to refresh the colors and lines so that your tattoo looks good as new!

Tattoos are meant to be permanent, but unfortunately, they don't always stay that way. If you're starting to notice some fading, don't panic! There are plenty of things you can do to help prevent further fading and keep your tattoo looking its best.
